Planting
Bathed in the blue haze of wood and tobacco smoke, a friend shares the story of his night’s hunt.
Garden Lite
Things I never knew about planting yams (but even 2 year olds in Pal do):
· Always plant the yam with the head (where the leaves and stem comes out) down and the tail uncovered.
· Break up the ground well but not too deeply (the yam may like life inside the ground too well).
· Always fall the trees in the garden over the newly planted yams ( provides shade, protection from pigs, and a place for the yam vine to climb up).
· Always be aware of exactly who plants each yam so that you will know who has the right to dig it up.
The expert gardeners in Pal have been more than willing to teach us about taking care of crops and how they live on the food that they produce. We have been amazed at their resourcefulness and their depth of knowledge of all kinds of plants. I have never seen them waste seeds of any kind. With this year’s garden season drawing to a close, we’ll find ourselves moving on to house-building and other projects. At the same time we’ll look forward to more times with our friends working and telling stories together in the gardens next year (and we’ll look forward to digging up those 12 yams we have a right to - if we can even remember which ones they were.)
Conference
We’ll be taking a short trip to town next week to be a part of our region’s annual conference. The kids are looking forward to a VBS program (did someone say dinosaurs?), Elizabeth is looking forward to not having to cook for a couple of days, and Nate is looking forward to asking lots of questions to all of the veteran missionaries that will be there. That said, we’ll not be putting out an update next week as we’ll be up to our armpits in conference duties, supply buying, and connecting with other church planters.
Pray
You can be praying for us:
· With six more weeks of Language and Culture study before we head back to the States that we’d get as far along as possible.
· For the families that have graciously decided to come and visit us – that they would both enjoy their view of the ministry in Pal and be encouraged by what the Lord is doing here.
· For safe travel on Tuesday (Sept 28) and Tuesday (October 5) – especially for the weather as rainy season is about to begin.
· For the details of our time in America to come together for us. (lots of catch up to do with family and friends as well as church visits, housing, transportation etc)
· For the Pal people –that they would continue to see by our actions that the message we are bringing them is truly essential to them.
Thanks so very much!
